Immediately following General Meeting - College Prep Program by Megan Dorsey

- ARJH to Host College Prep Program on Monday, 4/16, 6 p.m. - How to Help Your Child Prepare For College without Being the Tiger Mom
- There are small things parents can do before their children enter high school to help pave the way to an easier and more successful college admissions process later. You don’t have to be an overbearing helicopter parent or strict results-driven Tiger Mom. Learn exactly what colleges are looking for and how you can guide your child to meet these expectations throughout school. Whether your child is already in high school or just starting middle school, the topics we will cover are the basics of college admission counseling – things you can apply right now.

We will discuss the 5 A’s to college admission:

 1. Academics: Good grades matter, but there is so much more. Find out why class selection matters and what your child should be taking each year of high school.

 2. Assessment: What tests should your child take? When? How will colleges use the SAT or ACT? What about AP exams, SAT Subject Tests, and state level assessments?

 3. Activities: What do colleges expect to see on a student’s resume? Understand how hobbies, interests, and jobs can help develop leadership. What opportunities are most students missing?

 4. Applications: Completing the actual application may be many years off, but it is good to start with the end in mind. Learn the common mistakes that cost students admissions and scholarship opportunities.

5. Awareness: Every student is different. Every family is different and every college is different. By developing an awareness of your child’s strengths, talents, abilities, and academic needs, you can begin to guide them to the college atmosphere that will best serve them and meet your family’s needs.

Megan Dorsey is a leading expert in SAT preparation and college advising. Megan has her Bachelor's degree from Rice University, Master's in Educational Psychology & Counseling from University of Houston, and Certification in College Counseling from UCLA. Megan has enjoyed a 16 year career in education, and understands the inner-workings of SAT evaluation processes; she graded SAT essays for the new writing section in 2005. Prior to founding College Prep LLC, Megan worked as the college counselor at Westside High School in Houston, Texas. In her last year as a counselor, the senior class of 550 students earned over $14 million in scholarships. (Megan is a resident of Greatwood and had donated thousands of hours of service to our area schools.)
